Brasília
Brasília (Portuguese pronunciation: [bɾaˈziljɐ]) is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located atop the Brazilian highlands in the country's center-western region. It was founded on April 21, 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília and its metro (encompassing the whole of the Federal District) had a population of 2,556,149 in 2011, making it the 4th most populous city in Brazil. Among major Latin American cities, Brasília has the highest GDP per capita at R$61,915 (US$36,175).
Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 in order to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning.

293 Brasilia is a large Main belt asteroid that was discovered by French astronomer Auguste Charlois on May 20, 1890 in Nice.
Photometric observations of this asteroid at the Leura Observatory in Leura, Australia during 2006 gave a light curve with a period of 8.173 ± 0.002 hours and a brightness variation of 0.20 ± 0.03 in magnitude.

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has testified to federal police about his conduct around the January 8 attack on government buildings by his supporters in the capital Brasilia following his election loss.
Bolsonaro arrived at the police headquarters in a vehicle with tinted windows on Wednesday morning and did not make a statement to journalists, the AFP news agency reported.
After his testimony, his spokesperson Fabio Wajngarten briefly spoke to reporters, saying that Bolsonaro “repudiated all the unfortunate events that happened in Brasilia”.
The far-right former president is being investigated for his alleged role in the riots, during which his supporters ransacked the buildings of the Supreme Court, Congress and the presidential palace to protest against his narrow loss to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in October.
Hundreds of suspected rioters are expected to stand trial.

Puerto Rico, acquired by the United States from Spain in 1898 after the Spanish-American War, is a commonwealth, or self-governing state, subject to the authority of Congress. Residents can vote in presidential primaries but not the general election. The island has a nonvoting member of Congress but no voting representatives or senators, as states have.
Puerto Rico has given its residents the opportunity to express their opinion on the island's governmental status, holding various nonbinding votes on its relationship to the United States. In a 2020 ballot measure that asked a single question about statehood, 52.3% of voters said they favored Puerto Rico becoming a state. In three earlier nonbinding plebiscites between 1967 and 1998, a majority of Puerto Rican voters favored remaining as a commonwealth. Other residents favored outright independence.

Accused of transferring money from the state-owned Bank of Brazil - without the approval of Congress - to cover a massive budget deficit, Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff is fighting for her political life.
Rousseff insists she is the victim of a political coup d'etat triggered by a thirst for revenge, and made worse by a dramatic slowdown in economic growth.
Now abandoned even by her vice president who has taken over her office, Rousseff has one trusted ally - the man she appointed attorney general, who is today leading her defence team.
Jose Eduardo Cardozo is a passionate defender of the president, even though she caved into pressure to remove him as justice minister in February when he refused to block corruption investigations against members of their own party. When her trial begins, he must convince the Senate that Rousseff is innocent.

A majority of Brazil's supreme court judges say they'll support the claim for a reservation in Roraima state to remain in the hands of indigenous people. But the decision isn't yet final, and a ruling isn't expected until next year. Indigenous leaders say they hope the ruling will set a precendent protecting the rights of their people. The lawyer representing the indigenous people in that case is Joenia Batista de Carvalho. An indigenous person herself, she has overcome long odds to present the case in front of Brazil's highest court. Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro has testified to federal police about his conduct around the January 8 attack on government buildings by his supporters in the capital Brasilia following his election loss.
Bolsonaro arrived at the police headquarters in a vehicle with tinted windows on Wednesday morning and did not make a statement to journalists, the AFP news agency reported.
After his testimony, his spokesperson Fabio Wajngarten briefly spoke to reporters, saying that Bolsonaro “repudiated all the unfortunate events that happened in Brasilia”.
The far-right former president is being investigated for his alleged role in the riots, during which his supporters ransacked the buildings of the Supreme Court, Congress and the presidential palace to protest against his narrow loss to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva in October.
Hundreds of suspected rioters are expected to stand trial.

Brasília (Portuguese pronunciation: [bɾaˈziljɐ]) is the federal capital of Brazil and seat of government of the Federal District. The city is located atop the Brazilian highlands in the country's center-western region. It was founded on April 21, 1960, to serve as the new national capital. Brasília and its metro (encompassing the whole of the Federal District) had a population of 2,556,149 in 2011, making it the 4th most populous city in Brazil. Among major Latin American cities, Brasília has the highest GDP per capita at R$61,915 (US$36,175).
Brasília was planned and developed by Lúcio Costa and Oscar Niemeyer in 1956 in order to move the capital from Rio de Janeiro to a more central location. The landscape architect was Roberto Burle Marx. The city's design divides it into numbered blocks as well as sectors for specified activities, such as the Hotel Sector, the Banking Sector and the Embassy Sector. Brasília was chosen as a UNESCO World Heritage Site due to its modernist architecture and uniquely artistic urban planning.
